Old Time Baseball
One of the Long Island Fair's most popular attractions
is our old time baseball league. During the year, Old Bethpage
Village sponsors two vintage baseball leagues: 1867 Rules
and 1887 Rules. Each features teams recreated from actual
baseball clubs that played on Long Island.
The Fair marks the end of the regular season and the beginning
of the playoffs. Playoff games are scheduled throughout
the weekend days, culminating in championship mathch-ups
with games on the final Sunday and Monday of the Fair.
In all, there are ten teams in the program. The 1867 league
is made up of the Knickerbocker BBC, Mineola Washingtons,
Hempstead Eurekas, and Brooklyn Excelsiors. The 1887 league
consists of the Glenhead Zig Zags, Hicksville Ozones, Westbury
BBC, Bellmore Seminoles, and the Seacliff Idlewilds. In
addition to the nine regular season teams, the league has
its own traveling squad, the New York Mutuals, who represent
Old Bethpage at various tournaments and whenever other traveling
clubs come to town.
The games are competitive, and are played in recreated
period uniforms, with period equipment, in the historic
setting of the Village Restoration.
